It was more than 7 months ago when Maurice wandered up to a country home in Missouri.  We don't even know how he did it, dragging himself all the way.  This boy had an unbelievable amount of determination and he was not about to give up.  Maurice had a dislocated hip on one leg, and his other back leg had multiple fractures.  He was very thin, and did not look like he could possibly make it.   
 
Everyone who came in contact with Maurice knew that he was something special.  He was nearly dead, but his tail never stopped wagging.  The surgeries that he needed were so specialized. Maurice  was taken to the University of Missouri's Vet School, and surgeries were performed on both legs.  The hip was put back into place, and the broken leg was repaired with an external fixator device.  Again, Maurice made more new friends, and won any hearts.  Unfortunately, the hip did not hold, and an FHO, to remove the head of the femur, was performed.  
 Maurice made lots of progress through the next few weeks, and learned to use his new hip well.  He got stronger.  He wanted to PLAY!!!  The other leg was not so cooperative and the bones were so badly damaged that although things were progressing, it was slow.  FINALLY, in  March the fixator was removed with 2 separate surgeries, a month apart.  
 
Maurice is now ready for his new life.  He is ready for long leash walks that will continue to strengthen his bones.  He is not able to run as free as he would probably like, but that is coming.  Maurice loves everyone.  He is great with other dogs, although he can not have the freedom to wrestle yet.  He is also great with cats.  He is now neutered, UTD on shots, and HW negative.  Maurice is about 6 yrs old, and is house trained.  He also loves the bed, as you can see from the photos below.
